Spots for a Picnic in Southern Maryland

Whether you’re looking for a romantic picnic for two or are planning a family reunion with BBQ, games, and laughter, Southern Maryland has a lot of picnic spots to choose from. Summer is almost over, so make sure you go to a few of these spots before it gets too cold out. Here are a few of our favorites:

Wheaton Regional Park

Wheaton Regional Park is made up of 536 acres of forested area as well as Pine Lake. The park offers fishing, hiking, biking, or horseback riding through paved and natural surface trails, as well as playgrounds and a miniature train. The picnic areas are located on the shores of Pine Lake. There are eight picnic shelters that may be reserved, and each can accommodate up to 40 people, making this the perfect place to bring the entire family along.

Greenwell State Park

Set on the Patuxent River, Greenwell State Park offers miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. There’s also a waterfront for kayaking and canoeing, and a 50-foot pier for fishing. The gravel road leads past the historic Rosedale Manor and Chapel with horse pastures on either side, and the picnic areas are strewn throughout the park and have nice shaded views of the river. This is a great spot if you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon.

Summerseat Farm

Rich in history, Summerseat Farm dates back to the 17th century. Stroll through this 120 acre working farm and you’ll see the old Queen Anne style house, meat and dairy houses, barns, and gardens. Summerseat is known for its publicly accessible herd of American buffalo, roaming farm animals, vineyard, and trails. Tables and gazebos are available throughout the property to enjoy your picnic, or you can lay out a blanket under a tree and soak in the view.

Gilbert Run Park

Open seasonally, Gilbert Run Park is a forested area surrounding a freshwater lake. The park offers picnic areas with grills and tables, as well as picnic gazebos. The freshwater lake is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boating, or fishing. A fisherman’s dream, the lake is full of multiple types of fish like bass, bluegill, and trout. Fishing supplies, fishing licenses, and concessions are also available on-site.
