Maryland’s Best Spots for Frozen Treats

There’s nothing better to beat the heat than a frozen treat, and Southern Maryland has plenty of spots to go. Creative flavors, cow-to-cone-creameries, and 250 years of experience make Maryland an ideal place for ice-cream lovers. Here are some places you won’t want to miss:

Chesapeake Bay Farms Inc.

Chesapeake Bay Farms provides a unique experience for families at their cow-to-cone creamery. Enjoy homemade ice cream while visiting the many farm animals that call this farm home. You can even try your hand at milking with their robotic re-circulating cow. There’s an array of products to choose from including hand-dipped ice cream by the cup, cone, or packaged to take home, along with a wide variety of artisan cheeses, fresh hand-stretched mozzarella, fresh milk, butter, eggs, and more.

Dumser’s Dairyland

A staple on the Ocean City boardwalk, this 1940s style ice cream parlor makes fresh ice cream daily,  a tradition that began in 1939. Flavors include the staples such as chocolate and vanilla, as well as more creative concoctions like coconut chocolate chip and Hawaiian delight (cherries, pineapples and bananas in vanilla ice cream). Sample a cone or splurge on a banana split, but either way, you won’t be disappointed.

Island Creamery

This two generation family-run business started in 1975. Island Creamery finds inspiration from local fruit farmers for their tasty experimental concoctions created in the kitchen. Traditional flavors are available along with some fun creations such as bourbon caramel crunch, Snickers cheesecake, and cotton candy.  They seem to have something for everyone, as the menu includes sugar free and vegan ice cream also. When you go, don’t forget to try their homemade waffle cones.

Justine’s

Also a staple on the boardwalk in Ocean City, Justine’s offers a flavorful assortment of ice cream, soft serve, frozen yogurt, non-dairy sorbet, and sherbets. With 42 flavors to choose from, including original flavors such as pumpkin, red velvet, or blueberry cheesecake, you’ll be sure to have a delicious frozen treat. Make sure to check out Justine’s famous wall of shakes with 77 classic and signature milkshakes.

Kilby Creamery

Starting out as dairy farmers for more than 100 years, the Kilby family started making ice cream in 2005. The ice cream shop is located on one of their farms just outside of Rising Sun. Enjoy ice cream, shakes, sundaes, smoothies, blended iced coffee drinks, and more. They also have different flavors like Holstein Cream, Udderly Chocolate, or the Moo Mobile. There’s even a playground and farm-petting zoo to keep the kids entertained.

Scottish Highland Creamery

As a teenager in Edinburgh, Scotland, Victor Barlow worked in an Italian ice cream shop that opened in 1907. Through the years, he became manager of the shop and inherited their secret family recipes which he recreates at the Scottish Highland Creamery. Providing 16 flavors each day, this creamery has over 600 flavors in their rotation including Double Belgian Chocolate, Dulce de Leche, and Tiramisu.
