How to Maximize Your Guest Bedroom

If you’re lucky enough to have an additional room in your home, perhaps it’s wound up as the guest room. Many homeowners appreciate having a guest bedroom in their homes, though often, this space can be underutilized. For homeowners who want to maximize their space and make the most of their homes, taking full advantage of their guest room is a great place to start. So, what can homeowners do? Here are a few ideas:

Think About Function

Maybe overnight guests are not a common occurrence, at least right now. But under more normal circumstances, how often do you host guests in this room? Once a month? Once a year? This is important in determining how much of the room should be dedicated to serving as a bedroom. From there, what else do you need in your home? Additional work space? More storage? Brainstorm some of the things you’d like to have in your home – you may find that some of these are a perfect match with your guest room.

Consider Adding an Office Area

Guest rooms are great multipurpose spaces. Especially now if you’re not hosting guests very often, taking advantage of the space and privacy can be perfect for those working from home. Adding even a small desk can transform the room for you, giving you a set place to focus on your work. If there’s not quite enough room for a desk with a bed set up, maybe you consider downsizing the bed or going for a futon instead.

Take Advantage of Storage Options

When the room is functioning as a guest bedroom, short-stay guests don’t really need much for storage. While you don’t want to make the entire room feel like a storage locker, utilizing space under the bed and in the closet to store some belongings is a great way to maximize the space. Maybe you add a few pieces of furniture that also can double function as storage systems for you and your family.

Think About the Whole Family

With so many of us spending more time at home, your guest room could be at least a partial answer to some of your home needs. Do your kids need an additional space to play or focus on schoolwork? Are you working out at home instead of going to the gym? Thinking about who might need additional space and how you could creatively repurpose your guest bedroom can help everyone feel they have a bit more room to spread out.

Do you have a guest bedroom? How do you use it? Is it multifunctional? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
