How to Make Your Southern Maryland Kitchen Feel Like New

The kitchen is at the heart of the home — a place that can be full of laughter, creativity, great food and drinks. But, how much pleasure do you derive from cooking in there? If your answer is ‘not much’, then maybe it’s time to give your Southern Maryland kitchen a makeover. There’s no point in breaking the bank and spending a fortune on a remodel, as there are some easy fixes you can do on your own. Here are things that might help make your kitchen feel like new:

Walls

A simple way to liven up your kitchen is by adding some color to the walls. Go with a color palette that brings a smile to your face, and consider designating a focal wall by adding a pattern with wallpaper. If you’re not wild about the idea of wallpaper, chalkboard paint is a terrific way to create a focal wall that is both functional and fun. When the paint is dry and the wallpaper has adhered, add an eclectic array of art. Create a wall of mirrors or plates, add some floating shelves for your serving platters and cookbooks — have some fun and get creative.

Cabinets

Outdated cabinets can be an eyesore, but the good news is that it’s quite easy to resuscitate them with a fresh, new look. You have quite a few options when deciding on a kitchen cabinet facelift; like painting them, re-staining them, or removing the cabinet doors altogether and creating an open-shelving look. Before you begin any of those projects, be sure to clean the surfaces thoroughly, remove all the hardware, fill in any holes with wood putty, and give them a comprehensive sanding before reinstalling the doors and hardware. If your hardware is outdated, pick up some new knobs and pulls for an updated look.

Backsplash

A backsplash is a great way to make your kitchen feel like new and these days it’s easier than it’s ever been to install. You’re no longer limited to just tile. Peel-and-stick tiles are a DIY revelation — they’re very easy to install, and they look spectacular. Some other available options are stainless steel, tin tiles, cork, shiplap, or beadboard. Settle on the look you’re aiming for and then choose the best option.

Color

Adding bursts of color to any room can make it feel like new. Paint your existing kitchen stools, add some fresh flowers, vibrant rugs, or even a new kettle on the stovetop. A small windowsill herb garden and some small plants can add a colorful, organic element. Small pops of bright and cheery color can change the feel of the entire space.

Clutter

Kitchen storage is in short supply in most cases, and there’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to find what you need when you’re in the throes of making a meal. It may be time to clear the clutter and organize your kitchen items. If you need to, add some additional storage like a pot rack, shelving (horizontal or vertical), or organizational racks inside the cabinets. Organize your pantry by storing like-items together with those used most within reach. Stow away items that don’t get used on an everyday basis, and clear your countertops except for items like your coffee maker, frequently used utensils, and a cutting board. Your kitchen should be functional for you and your lifestyle.

These inexpensive DIY projects can give your kitchen a whole new look and feel, and they can make it feel like the heart of the home again.
