How to Maintain Curb Appeal Through a Southern Maryland Winter

Whether you’re planning to sell or simply want to keep things in tip-top shape over the winter, maintaining curb appeal during the winter months in Southern Maryland can present some challenges. To combat snowfall, grey skies and shorter days, the idea is to brighten what can become a dull exterior. Here are some things to keep in mind if you want to maintain your curb appeal over the colder months:

Keep the Sidewalks and Driveway Clear

We all know that keeping the sidewalks and driveway free of ice, snow and debris leaves the path to your home safe and clear while also preserving your home’s attractiveness. Consider repairing any existing cracks and applying sealant to keep water from soaking in. Put away any hoses, tools, or toys from the yard, as well.

Exterior Lighting

Additional lighting will really warm up your winter home, aesthetically. You don’t need to reserve the use of string lights for just the holidays — use them to accentuate architectural elements like arbors or sitting areas or to light up your trees. Some lanterns around will cast a nice glow, whether you use traditional candles or the battery-operated variety. Luminarias are another terrific idea to create a warm and welcoming feeling. Additional exterior lighting not only increases the security of your home, it enhances the cozy and inviting factor.

Add Some Bold Color

Brightening up your front door by adding a pop of color with a new coat of paint will really work to make a home stand out. Be as bold as you want in your choice of color, but also make sure it’s complimentary to the home’s existing color palette. In addition to sprucing up your entry door, you may also consider painting the mailbox, adding some new porch numbers and a new porch mat.

Incorporate Some Greenery

The types of greenery you can add to the exterior of your home will be quite limited in the winter months, but the addition of potted plants to line your walkways and adorn your porch will absolutely increase your curb appeal. Choose holly with berries, evergreens, or ivy if you want greenery that will live through the winter. Find decorative pots or baskets to plant them in and arrange them together for some depth. If you’re going for a festive look, add some garland to your handrails and windows and a hang a wreath on your front door.

Stay On Top of Maintenance

Winter isn’t the easiest time to stay motivated, but it’s important to keep up on your outdoor maintenance. Survey all the trees in your yard to see if any branches need trimming. You want to trim anything that could cause damage in a storm or might be too weak to handle the weight of accumulated snow. To make sure water is draining correctly, keep your gutters clean and free from debris. If you see any rotting wood on your windowsills or front porch, replace it.

The winter might make the sky look gray and gloomy, but your house doesn’t have to reflect that. These easy tips will spruce up the exterior of your house and make it feel festive and cheerful for the winter season.
