Creating a Cozy Southern Maryland Home This Fall

Fall is here, and Southern Maryland homeowners may be ready to heighten the cozy vibe. With many of us still planning to spend a bit more time at home this fall, it’s nice to make your home even more inviting and comfortable than you normally would. For some of us, fall decor starts and stops with Halloween decorations and pumpkins, but these things won’t necessarily make our houses feel any cozier. Here are a few ideas to make your home feel like the perfect space to relax this fall:

Accents

Bringing in some warm colors can instantly change the feeling of a room, whether it’s pillows, blankets, artwork, or any other pieces of decor. Browns, maroons, burnt oranges, and navy are all great color options for making a space feel cozy. These things don’t need to shout ‘fall’ to have the desired effect. Select some pieces that you actually like from a color palette that reflects the time of year.

Rugs

A rug can really tie a room together—it anchors the space and makes it feel more inviting. Perhaps it’s a small rug under the coffee table in your living room, or maybe a rug by your bed for your first steps on a chilly morning. A thicker rug, or one with a bit more texture, will add to the warmth.

Blankets

Blankets can be both functional and stylish. They’re a terrific way to bring in those fall colors I mentioned above, and they also give you the opportunity to add some texture. Chunky knits are apropos for fall. A blanket simply draped over the back of your couch, or the side of a chair, can make the space more inviting for you and the family.

Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a more comforting feeling in your home. Now that the days are getting shorter, we can get creative with how we light our homes at night. Overhead lights can sometimes be a little harsh. Lamps are a great place to start, and adding some candles can really take the cozy factor up a few levels. The soft, natural glow they cast can make any room feel more charming.

Baking

When we think of how to make our homes more comfortable, we often think about decorations or style, but that’s not the only way to get it feeling ready for fall. Scents are powerful, and baking up some delightful fall treats can carry that autumnal smell throughout the entire home. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove are great choices. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy eating those treats in the comfort of your cozied-up space. If baking isn’t your thing, scented candles can give you a similar effect without all the work.

With just a few minor adjustments we can increase the comfort level of our homes and have a cozier fall season.
