April Events in Southern Maryland

This month in the southern Maryland area, there are plenty of opportunities to get out in your local community and stretch your legs. Whether you want to get your kids out of the house, or you’re looking for cultural festivals and events to expand your horizons, here are some of the top events to consider:

Project ECHO Empty Bowl Supper

When: Saturday, April 6th, 2019 | 4:30 – 7PM

Where: St John Vianney | Prince Frederick, MD

This is a fun event supporting a great cause. If you haven’t yet heard of an “Empty Bowl” supper, the night is centered around a dinner donated by local restaurants and caterers, and each person will go home with a hand-crafted bowl made and donated by a local artisan. At this Project ECHO Empty Bowl supper, they’ll also have a live band and a silent auction with about 100 items including gift certificates, locally-made art, and even a vacation. Best of all, your ticket cost goes directly towards a shelter night for one homeless man, woman, or child.

Easter Egg Hunt

When: Saturday, April 13th, 2019 | 10AM – 2PM

Where: NewLife La Plata | 9690 Shepherds Creek Pl., La Plata, MD

There are a few great Easter egg hunts happening in the region, and this one in La Plata is one of the best. Happening the weekend before Easter, on Saturday, April 13th, it’s an all-ages egg hunt with free admission. They’ll also have music, food trucks, bounce houses, concessions, and games to enjoy. It’s sure to be an exciting family-friendly event.

This month, Bowie is hosting their 2019 Food, Wine, and Music Festival, and you can bet it’ll be well-attended. It’s a two-day event with wine tastings from local wineries, food vendors, a classic car show, and exhibitors and artisans. They’ll have two stages of live music and entertainment at this event to showcase the talent in the area. The event is free and benefits Concerts for Causes, an organization which raises funds to give musical instruments to students in underserved communities.

Cherry Blossom Festival – Sakura Sunday

When: Sunday, April 14th, 2019 | 11:00AM – 8:00PM

Where: National Harbor | 137 National Plaza, National Harbor, MD

This is another free, family-friendly event happening in National Harbor this month. The National Harbor, with over 200 lovely Okame cherry blossom trees in its collection, has partnered with the Japan-American Society of Washington, D.C. for this Cherry Blossom Festival Sakura Sunday event. Come celebrate the Spring season, the gift of the cherry blossom trees, and Japanese culture with free activities and entertainment. There will be plenty of authentic Japanese Cherry Blossom bloom traditions to take part in, like a Japanese Market, Japanese-inspired music and entertainment, traditional Japanese picnicking with food for sale, as well as a sake, rosé, and a beer garden. Some local retailers will also take part in a cherry blossom display-window competition and offer special festival deals. The famed Capital Wheel will be pink throughout the festival, so you can’t miss it.
