Adding Minimalism to Your Home
Minimalism has become an incredibly popular home style trend, and Southern Maryland homeowners looking for some at-home projects can easily incorporate the style into their homes. Minimalism often extends far beyond style, too. For some, it’s a complete life philosophy, while for others, it’s more of an organization method. How you choose to interpret minimalism in your home is up to you. Whether it’s purely for style, or you really appreciate the philosophy behind it, adding a touch of minimalism to your home can help make your space feel cleaner and more peaceful. Here are a few strategies to help you get started:
Identify Your Goals
As I mentioned above, minimalism can mean many different things to homeowners, and before you set out on a minimalist mission, it’s important to understand your goals. Are you looking to get rid of excess and own less? Are you looking to reduce clutter? Do you simply want to give a few rooms a facelift? There will certainly be some overlap here, but it’s important to clarify your goals before starting the process so that you know how to proceed.
Be Methodical
No matter how deep you take the minimalism philosophy, if you’ve decided to apply any level of minimalism to your Southern Maryland home, going room by room is a great strategy. This is especially true if you’re really wanting to reduce your possessions. This can be a great time to go through those cabinets and closets we don’t often open. Even if you’re not planning on getting rid of much, it’s good to tackle every corner of the rooms you’re working in. This will help your minimalist style tweaks last beyond your initial cleaning.
Think Storage
Unless you take the minimalism philosophy to the extreme, you’ll likely still have many possessions that need a place to go. The goal isn’t to have an empty home. Get strategic and organized when it comes to storage. Once you’ve decided what you’re keeping and what you’re getting rid of, it’s really a matter of finding the most efficient ways to store what’s left. If you want your space to have that light and airy minimalist feeling, clutter has to go. Making sure everything has its designated spot will not only help you achieve that clean, simple style, but it will also help you and your family maintain it.
Consider Color
For many people, when they think minimalism, they think lots of white and maybe a touch of gray. While this is certainly one way to interpret the style, it’s not the only option. Minimalism doesn’t have to mean black and white and void of color. Getting specific with the colors you do want to incorporate in a room and keeping that pallet fairly simple is a great strategy, and that can certainly include a pop of color. You still want your home to feel like you. If you love shades of white and cream, go for it. But if you have a favorite blue chair in the living room, it doesn’t mean you need to throw it out to achieve that minimalist style.
Have you taken on any minimalist projects while at home recently? Do you think of minimalism more as a style, or do you like the deeper philosophy of it? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
