If you’re getting ready to move into your first Southern Maryland home, you’re going to have a lot on your mind. It’s an exciting time, but also can be an overwhelming one. And because of that, you may need a little assistance to not overlook some of the basic necessities you’ll need for your new place. From making sure that your new home feels safe and clean to ensuring that it feels like you, here are a few things to consider in the beginning:

Tools

Many first-time buyers moving from apartments (where a landlord took care of the majority of the maintenance) aren’t fully prepared for the demands of homeownership. Equipping yourself with a stocked tool kit can help you tackle those small projects as they pop up without missing a beat. Maybe you notice the handles on a few of the kitchen cabinets are loose, or maybe you want to hang up some photos, having a good tool kit will mean you can address these things right away.

Cleaning Supplies

Sometimes cleaning supplies don’t make it through the move. Maybe you used them up to do a final cleaning before moving out, or maybe you left them behind in the bustle. Stocking up with the basics here can make your move in feel a lot better. Even if your new home feels clean, it’s a good idea to give it a once over yourself. Arriving with a few basics, like something to clean the kitchen and bathroom, paper towels, and a broom can help you dive right in.

For Safety

Some things may seem so simple, they’re easy to overlook. Having a flashlight in case the power goes out, for example, can really come in handy. Homeowners may also want to upgrade the fire detectors and carbon monoxide monitors. If security is a priority, changing the locks may be something you’ll want to do right away.

Art

While the practical items are no doubt important, it’s also important that homeowners feel at home in their new space. Bringing some artwork to add some of your style can be a quick way to jumpstart that process of making this home your own. Maybe setting aside a few of your favorite pieces so that they’re easily accessible will allow you to put your mark on the space even before you’re fully settled in.
 

The must-have list will be a little different for everyone. The key here is to have a list like this in advance to set you up for a successful move-in.
