Tips to Make Your Southern Maryland Home More Energy Efficient?

Do you know how energy efficient your Southern Maryland home is? Whether your concern is environmental, or you just want to save some money on your electric bill, there are some simple things you can do to find out where you are currently, and some simple things you can do to improve your energy efficiency. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Check for Drafts

If you feel a draft anywhere in the house, your heat or air conditioning could literally be going out the window. Air can enter and escape through your siding, so you want to make certain that you’re properly insulated all around. Do a maintenance check a few times each year. If you see dirty spots in your insulation, look for air leaks and mold. Drafts from windows and doors along with poor insulation can force your HVAC system to work overtime to achieve your desired temperature. Aside from the energy wastage, it can result in the need to repair or replace your system more frequently.

Check the Windows

Energy efficient windows are optimal and can save you money, but window replacement may not be in the budget. There are a few inexpensive upgrades that can help the original windows become more efficient. Adding a tint to your windows preserves the heat in the winter and the cooler air in summer. If you don’t like the idea of tinting the windows, you can upgrade the window treatments. Curtains made from a heavier fabric act as additional insulation when they’re closed. The same is true for wooden shutters and blinds. In addition to saving energy, it also minimizes interior glare, giving you some additional privacy and reducing the chance of UV damage to your belongings.

How Old are Your Appliances?

Appliances are probably responsible for the most energy loss in your home, as the average household typically has at least ten plugged in at all times. If your refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, or washer and dryer are more than ten years old, it’s likely they’re not energy-efficient models, so swapping them out for newer models is a good idea if the budget allows. If you decide to purchase new, be sure to choose models that are ‘Energy Star Certified’. Also, be mindful of your appliance usage, for example, get into the habit of running your appliances in the evening as opposed to during the hottest times of the day.

Check the Thermostat

Adjusting the temperature by just three degrees will make a noticeable difference on your bill and your energy usage. Consider getting into the habit of lowering the temperature when you’re away from home in the winter and raising it in the summer.

Add Shade

Planting trees is both beneficial for the environment and it can also save you energy and money. Well-positioned trees around the perimeter of your home will provide shade in the summer months, keeping the house cooler, and act as a wind blocker in the winter, improving your insulation.
