Creating an Outdoor Space for Fall

With many of us looking for ways to stay social outside, maximizing your outdoor space at home is key. While we still have some summer weather left, fall is approaching, and traditionally, that can have many of us spending more time inside. For Southern Maryland homeowners wanting to get a bit creative with their outdoor spaces and keep them functional into the fall months, there are some great ways to transition your space with the seasons. Here are some of the top tips for creating an outdoor space you can enjoy, even after the summer weather is gone:

Lighting is Key

One of the best parts of summer is how long the days are. This is often a huge motivator to utilize our outdoor spaces. When you still have several hours of daylight after finishing up your workday, why not enjoy them on your patio or deck? This is why lighting is so important when it comes to making your outdoor space appealing in the fall. There are so many options for outdoor lighting, and homeowners can get creative combining their favorites. Maybe you hang up some string lights or add some candles. Torches can give off a nice glow, while lights lower to the ground ensure you can see where you’re stepping. The idea is creating a space that feels inviting, even after the sun has set. Lighting can really create a magical ambiance, so do some research and find the styles that you like best.

Get Cozy

The nights may start to get a bit chillier, but that’s no reason to have to move inside. Adding more pillows and blankets to your outdoor area lets you stay even as the temperature drops. Depending on what materials you buy, these may get damp overnight or take a while to dry if wet from the rain. Keeping a basket of a few blankets by the door to bring out when you go is a great solution. Outdoor rugs can also help add to the cozy vibe, and they can really tie a space together.

Add Some Heat

Depending on how late in the season you use your outdoor space, eventually, a blanket may not be quite enough to keep you comfortable. When possible, homeowners may want to look into some additional heating sources. There are countless options when it comes to outdoor heaters, and there are many great choices that won’t cost you a fortune. If you don’t want to go electric, a fire pit is another possible heat source for some homeowners. Depending on your set-up, bringing in an additional heat source may be the key to enjoying your outdoor space for months to come.

Mix it Up

If you’ve used your patio or deck all summer long, it can be nice to give it a reset for fall. Rearranging the furniture, especially if you’re bringing in some added heat sources, is a great place to start. From there, new plants can help spruce up your space and embrace the changing season.

Will you be extending the life of your outdoor space this year? What plans do you have to transition into fall? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
