Making the Most of a Small Home
Perhaps you found the perfect location and purchased a home that was a bit smaller than you’d wanted, or maybe your family has grown over the years. Whatever the case, if your southern Maryland home is feeling a bit snug, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to start house hunting right away. If you love your space, there are plenty of great strategies homeowners can use to maximize and make the most of it. Here are a few ideas worth trying out:
Think Outside the Box
If your house just doesn’t seem to have quite enough space, especially now with many family members spending more time at home, don’t forget that it’s not just about your home, it’s about your property. Look beyond the walls of your home when it comes to creating space. While you might not be able to use an outdoor area year-round, many southern Marylanders love a fall evening around a backyard fire pit. So, get creative. Whether you have a patio or simply section off an area of the yard and add some outdoor furniture and decor, making use of your outdoor space can help your indoor space feel a bit less cramped.
Invest in Organization
One of the main reasons our homes can feel small is because of how much we put in them. Sometimes, you’ve truly outgrown your space and it’s time for a move. Other times, you may just need to declutter and downsize your belongings. If you’re committed to making your home work for you and your family, assess what things you may no longer need. From there, focus on putting some smart organization and storage systems in place that take advantage of those under-utilized spaces like underneath beds or the top shelves in a closet.
Think About Purpose
In a small space, your rooms will likely need to serve multiple functions. If you have kids, for example, designing bedrooms for more than sleeping can give them their own little oasis. Whether it’s adding in some furniture where they can do their homework or curl up with a book or TV show, creating a hangout space in addition to a sleep space maximizes the room.
Decorate to Brighten
Finally, if your space is feeling cramped, light is key. Start with letting in as much natural light as possible. From there, go for lighter color pallets, with a few pops of color. Bright, fresh design choices can help make a room feel more airy and spacious. Keep simplicity in mind as you decorate. Less is often more, especially when it comes to a smaller space.
Does it ever feel like your home is just a bit too small? Do you have any strategies that help you make it work? Or is it time to start looking for a new place? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
