Home Improvement Projects To Do
Spring is here, and it’s time to let the spring cleaning begin. On top of that spring cleaning, why not tackle all of those projects you’ve been putting off throughout the winter months? Spring is the perfect time of year to give your home a cheerful makeover – the sun is shining, the temperature is rising, and your home improvement tasks are awaiting. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Inspect the Gutters
While this isn’t the most pleasant project in the world, April showers are approaching and if those gutters are blocked or damaged in areas, they won’t drain correctly and cause water damage to your roof, foundation, siding, or windows. Start by cleaning out all of the winter debris, and be sure to wear gloves, as critters like to nest in the leaves and twigs. Once they’re cleaned out, inspect the entire system for rust, cracks, as well as any bent areas or areas that are no longer secured correctly. Double check the direction of the downspouts to ensure they’ll be directing the flow of water away from the home. Once you replace any damaged gutters and spouts, you’ll be ready for the April wetness.
Add a Deck
Get your home ready for summer BBQs by adding a deck. Picture yourself sitting outside with your morning coffee, or having a glass of wine as the sun goes down, or gathering with a group of friends for a summertime potluck. If you enjoy outside time, a deck is the perfect addition to your home that also adds value. There are a few options when choosing your deck materials, wood is the most common, but many are opting to use a more environmentally friendly composite material. If you do opt for wood, the most commonly used types are chemically treated redwood, cedar, mahogany, or teak. Your deck will require maintenance, so be prepared to stain and treat prior to the winter months.
Paint
Spring is the perfect time to give your interior walls a makeover with a fresh coat of paint. The weather is warm enough to open up your windows and doors to allow you the proper air flow and ventilation. When searching for the perfect paint color, keep in mind that paint often dries a little darker than what you see on the swatch. It’s a good idea to paint some test areas first to ensure the color is right for you. Once the paint has dried and your furniture is back in place, try rearranging your artwork for a truly fresh look.
Landscaping
The sun is shining and the weather is warm, and it’s the perfect time to get outside and soak up some Vitamin D. It’s also the perfect time to do some spring planting and yard maintenance. Give your lawn a good raking and use the leaves to start a compost pile. Once the lawn is cleared of debris, look for any bare spots that may need reseeding. Go ahead and start your fertilizing, as getting a head start in the spring ensures a thick and weed free lawn throughout the summer. While you’re at it, you may want to create some new beds for flowers, herbs, or veggies.
Spruce Up the Front Porch
First impressions go a long way when meeting people, and your curb appeal is your home’s first impression, so why not make it stand out? Take a good look and see if there are any repairs needed such as moldings, railings, or perhaps a creaky step. Consider painting your front door a bolder color to give it some character. Update your accessories such as house numbers, your mailbox, a door knocker, a new welcome mat, or the light fixtures. Lastly, add some potted plants for little pops of color and vibrancy.
When owning a home, there are always projects to be done. Updates and maintenance are a given, but improvement projects do just that, improve the quality of lifestyle in your home. Enjoy your labors of love with the whole family once those projects are completed. What are some projects you’ve started this spring?
