Southern Maryland March Events

As we head towards the end of winter in Southern Maryland, the area starts to come alive. This month, there are plenty of exciting events to check-out across the region. Here are some standout ones you won’t want to miss:

Opening Day: Hancock Family Farms Market Season

When: Saturday, March 9, 2019; 9AM – 2PM

Where: Hancock Family Farms, 10440 Hancock Farm Pl., La Plata, MD

If you’re like me, you’re missing farmers-market season in Southern Maryland. While it’s not quite the weather for many outdoor farmers markets just yet, there’s a farm in La Plata that’s kicking off their season on March 9th. At Hancock Family Farms, you can gather all you need for fresh local meats as well as farm fresh eggs. They’re an area favorite for picking up local steaks, hamburgers, bacon, pork, chicken, lamb, and more. Best of all, you’ll be spending your dollars to support sustainable and local family farming.

TRIO at Olde Town Pub

When: Sunday, March 17, 2019; 3 – 7PM

Where: Olde Town Pub, 22785 Washington St., Leonardtown, MD

What better place to grab a Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day than at a local pub? And this year, Olde Town Pub in Leonardtown will have special musical guest TRIO playing a fantastic set of live music. This is their first show as TRIO, though you might’ve heard of blues musician Josh Riley before. Joining him for this afternoon performance will be Alex Bizzarro on guitar and Cj Dickerson on drums. Consider celebrating St. Patty’s at Olde Town by enjoying some great brews, food, and music.

Taste of Solomons

When: Saturday, March 23, 2019; 11AM – 4PM

Where: Participating businesses in Solomons, MD

Nearing the end of this month, make sure to check out the annual Taste of Solomons event. This exciting one-day food festival is hosted by the Solomons Business Association and highlights the collection of vibrant restaurants in this waterfront town. During this event, participating restaurants and shops in town will offer tastes of their fine food and beverages all afternoon in exchange for you $5 “Taste of Solomons” tickets. It’s a great excuse to get out and stretch your legs and explore the delicious offerings in Solomons. Best of all, the proceeds from the event will benefit the Solomons Business Association’s annual July 4th Fireworks Display.

Maryland Day (Observed)

When: Saturday, March 23, 2019; 10AM – 4PM

Where: State House of 1676; 47418 Route 584, St. Mary’s City, MD

This year marks Maryland’s 385th anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than with the local community in Southern Maryland? While the actual date is the following Monday, March 25th, they’ll be observing the special day on Saturday, March 23rd as well. At the reconstructed State House of 1676 in St. Mary’s City, they’ll be hosting an official celebratory program with music, a flag ceremony, and a presentation of HSMC’s highest honor, the Cross Bottony Award. The fun continues after the State House ceremony with all of the outdoor living history sites open from 10:00AM – 4:00PM for you and your family to explore.

Maryland Day at St. Clement’s Island

When: Monday, March 25, 2019; 2:00 – 3:00PM

Where: St. Clement’s Island Museum; 38370 Point Breeze Rd., Coltons Point, MD

The founding of Maryland occurred right on St. Clement’s Island, so naturally, the State Park and Museum will be hosting a special celebration on Maryland Day. Make sure to join them at the museum for free admission, guest speakers, and to celebrate the day European colonists first arrived here in 1634. In addition to free museum admission, they’ll also offer water taxi rides over to the island from 10AM-5PM, where you can explore the 40 acres or so of state-park land, with hiking trails and plenty of spots to picnic and enjoy nature.

Though we haven’t seen the end of winter yet, March marks the start of springtime, and Southern Maryland becomes noticeably more vibrant. To celebrate the end of winter, why not get out in the community and enjoy some of the many events going on in the area this month. Do you have any other events you’d recommend this March?
